Cholera epidemic: salt in water protects against the disease
“Drinking saltwater protects against cholera, according to doctors.”
This rumour resurfaces with every epidemic outbreak in the east of the country.
WHO and National Cholera Elimination Programme protocols are clear: prevention relies on treated water, handwashing and sanitation. Treatment relies on oral rehydration salts, the composition of which is calibrated — homemade saltwater does not replicate this.
Real danger: water that is too salty accelerates water loss and can kill a dehydrated child.
