FACTUALITE Afrique obtained this interview, which traces the childhood of this young student born in 1997 who grew up in Tanga and Arusha in Tanzania, considered the linchpin who sponsored the ADF-Islamic State alliance from the Congolese forests of Beni.
Monitoring and reporting on security incidents involving the ADF in the eastern provinces of the DRC.
Security alert, profiling and tracking of high-profile targets within armed groups, #FactualiteAfrique provides regular updates on #ADF and #ISCAP ( = the group, affiliated to the Islamic State in Central Africa) movements and operational updates across the region. Our investigations track the profiles and backgrounds of key commanders involved in regional violence.
« The ADF's expansion in the region, and the radicalisation of youth from East Africa, highlight how regional security vulnerabilities are being exploited to fuel an insurgency that now threatens stability in eastern DRC. While several regional initiatives have attempted to stem the flow of recruits, the group's deep roots in local communities remain a major challenge » according to security analysts specialising in the #ADF and Great Lakes geopolitics. Recent reports have documented recruitment patterns involving young individuals from East Africa, particularly Tanzania, who are lured by promises of employment or religious zeal, only to find themselves trapped in jihadist training camps in the DRC. The international community has repeatedly expressed concern over the group's ability to cross borders undetected, recruiting vulnerable populations and expanding its influence across the region.
Portrait of the leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ISCAP branch), highlighting his background and involvement in regional security incidents. His profile has been scrutinized by security services and researchers since 2017, following a series of attacks attributed to the movement in eastern DRC. His leadership has been a major focus of regional military operations.
Unveiling the face of terror in the DRC: Behind the rise of the Allied Democratic Forces lies a complex web of regional recruitment and ideological radicalisation stretching from East Africa to the heart of the Congolese forests. Far from being a simple local rebellion, the group relies on a transnational network of financiers, logisticians, and recruiters who systematically indoctrinate vulnerable youth. This investigation traces the journey of key figures such as Ahmad Mahmood alias Abwakasi, whose upbringing in Tanzania laid the groundwork for his pivotal role in aligning the ADF with the Islamic State. Through exclusive accounts, intelligence reports, and field data, FactualiteAfrique exposes how regional porous borders, corruption, and local grievances are exploited to fuel an insurgency that threatens peace and security across the Great Lakes region.

Monitoring of security incidents involving #ADF in eastern DRC, following the latest operations conducted by #FactualiteAfrique journalists in the operational zones where violence persists against local populations in the Rwenzori sector of Beni territory.
Involved in recruitment networks in Tanzania and logistics management for the ADF, and having served as a key link between the group's leadership and various radical cells, #Abwakasi remains one of the most enigmatic figures behind the wave of civilian massacres in the eastern DRC. Recent investigations show that despite multiple international sanctions and targeted measures by Western governments, this individual continues to coordinate operational logistics from the shadows, ensuring the supply chains remain active for the group's expansion. According to regional intelligence reports, his ability to slip through security nets stems from deep local roots and mastery of regional dialects, allowing him to maintain discreet contacts across borders. While several allied commanders have been neutralised or captured by joint operations, Abwakasi appears to have adapted his strategies, blending into civilian networks in neighbouring countries. Independent researchers and local sources confirm he plays a central role in orchestrating ideological indoctrination, targeting vulnerable youth in rural communities to build a new generation of fighters. Behind the scenes, he is reported to have established financial channels through informal trade networks to fund the group's operations. Despite persistent efforts by security forces in the region, this high-ranking operative continues to pose a major threat to stability in the Great Lakes region.

Abwakasi’s mother testifies that her son subsequently began writing to her, but from different numbers and sporadically. He told his mother that he was safe and already had a wife. He indicated that he served Allah first and asked his mother not to try to come and look for him because he was far from #Tanzania and that if she managed to get to where he was, she too would no longer be able to leave that environment.
Twaiba, Abwakasi’s mother, states that she is a trader at the #Kariako market, one of the largest commercial centres in Dar es Salaam, and indicates that she is willing to cooperate with all services for any information needs regarding what she experienced and her sporadic conversations with her child, or to enlighten public opinion on the matter. She specifies that she has never sent a ransom to get her son back, as this proposal was never made to her by the group to which her child is affiliated.
